Dogfights, cockfights, and hog-dog fights kill and injure thousands of
animals a year. You can help stop this torture.

I know that you agree with me on this: Dogfighting, cockfighting, and hog-dog
fighting have no place in any civilized society. Here at The Humane Society of
the United States, we are disgusted by animal fighting, sickened by the thought
of it, and determined to stop it once and for all.
This year, we took a big step toward eliminating animal fighting in America when
the Senate unanimously passed the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act.
This bill, which would increase the penalties for trafficking in fighting
animals, has unfortunately been stalled in the House of Representatives for
The Humane Society of the United States is committed to doing everything
possible to make sure this legislation passes before Congress adjourns for the
holidays. We can't afford another year of weak penalties and weaker enforcement
that will allow thousands of animals to be killed or injured.

A New Threat
It is critical we persuade
Congress to address this threat and pass the animal fighting legislation without
You've probably heard of the serious danger of an avian flu outbreak that could
have horrific consequences -- a danger made worse by the practice of
transporting birds for use in animal fights. With the threat of an avian flu
pandemic, it is more important than ever that we stop the interstate and foreign
shipment of fighting birds. Already in Asia, several people have died from bird
flu reportedly due to cockfighting exposure. We must not wait until cockfighting
plays a role in spreading bird flu to the United States.
Our efforts to end animal fighting are not limited to just this federal
legislation -- we also seek to make dogfighting a felony in all 50 states, to
ban cockfighting in Louisiana and New Mexico, and to increase the penalties for
all forms of animal fighting wherever laws against these barbaric practices are
not strong enough.
Your support will make this
legislative campaign possible.
In our campaign, we are joined by the USDA, the National Chicken Council,
almost 400 local sheriffs across the country, numerous animal groups -- and
thousands of compassionate individuals just like you. We are up against a highly
organized movement, financed by high-stakes illegal gambling, that will use any
means necessary to keep these gruesome "sports" thriving in the United States.
To defeat them, we need to
raise much needed contributions to our Humane Society Legislative Fund for
education, lobbying, and grassroots programs.
Thank you for your contribution today, and I look forward to keeping you
updated on our progress on this campaign. Please know that I appreciate all you
do on behalf of animals every day.
Please, help us put an end
to animal fighting by making your contribution today.
Humane Society Legislative Fund
P.S. Last year, a federal bill to increase penalties for animal fighting
nearly passed Congress, but it didn’t get over the finish line. The result?
Animal fighting went unchecked for another year while helpless dogs, birds, and
other animals were killed for gambling and “entertainment” purposes. We can’t
let that happen again. We must stop these blood sports.
P.P.S. Donations to the Humane Society Legislative Fund are used exclusively
to press for laws that protect animals from cruelty, and therefore are not
to help protect America’s dogs and birds from vicious animal fights
and pass other animal protection laws.
